Wind Farm to be built in Lomé

Togo

In September 2012, the Government of Togo has signed a consession contract with the Eco Delta company for the construction and operation of a 25.2 MW wind farm in Lomé, following an international call for proposals. The concession has the duration of 22 years, of which 2 will be dedicated to set up financing, for construction and commissioning of the power plant.

Taking into account environmental and agricultural sustainability, the wind farm will be installed on a field not suitable for agricultural practices, 40 km2 of swamps in Kagomé, near river Zio. 11 to 14 wind turbines are to be installed, for a total investment which will be around 45 millions Euros. Eco Delta has reached out to the European Investment Bank for financing of this project, and Eco Delta is since February 2013 undertaking a tender according to EIB rules.

Delta Wind Togo, a company affiliated with the Eco Delta Group, conducted 3 years of studies in order for this project to be possible, and has since the beginning had the support of the Togolese Government. The wind farm will provide 5 to 7% of the electricity production in the country upon its completion, helping in the national effort towards a higher access to electricity and clean production. The plant will be connected to the grid operated by the Benin Electric Community, the power utility shared by Togo and Benin.

This wind farm will be the second of its kind in the ECOWAS region, following the Cabeolica wind project in Cape Verde.

More information about this project is available in ECOWREX.
