Senegal introduces VAT exemption for Renewable Energy products

Senegal efforts to have a tariff for renewable energy autoproducers close to bear fruit

The Regulation Commission for the Electricity Sector in Senegal (Commission de Régulation du Secteur de l'Electricité - CRSE), published by end of May 2018 in its website, the document for public consultation relating to the determination of the purchase price of surplus renewable energy produced by self-consumption. The public consultation period ends by end of July 2018. CRSE will organize a national workshop in August 2018 to officially present the concept of the document and address the comments received during the public consultation period.

The Workshop in Sustainable Energy investment in Guinea Bissau will be held in Lisbon (Portugal) on the 4th of May 2018. World Bank Interactive Applications to support energy planning and monitoring and evaluation

The World Bank recently released the ENERGYDATA.INFO platform with the aim of making open data and analytics on the energy sector increasingly available. Among different sections and datasets, the platform has a specific entry with interactive applications to support energy plannig, rural elecrification and monitoring and evaluation activities. Users have access to different tools, among which it could be highlighted under our special focus in West Africa: the Africa Electricity Grid Explorer, the Off-grid Market Opportunities application, the Regulatory Indicators for Sustainable Energy, the Global Tracking Framework application, Electrification Paths and Climatescope.

Developing Effective Off-Gride Lighting Policy for Africa

Creating favourable conditions for modern solar lighting markets can provide a low-cost solution to reducing carbon emissions, indoor air pollution and health risks, while bringing electricity to an estimated 600 million people in Africa who lack access to the power grid, says new report by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report recommends best practices and smart policies enabling the market uptake of off-grid lighting solutions. ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would be setting a new benchmark, as far as gender equality and energy access goes, through its “ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access”. The Policy, which aims to address inequalities that exist in energy production and consumption, would be the first of its kind.

The “ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access” will commit the governments of the Member States to concrete actions that would address existing barriers that may hinder the equal participation of women and men in expanding energy access in West Africa and contribute to the success of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative.

The Policy is being developed by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the ECOWAS Department of Social Affairs and Gender, with the assistance of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)/Clean Energy Solutions Centre of the United States.

REN21 in cooperation with the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has just released a new report: The ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status Report. The report provides a regional perspective on the renewable energy and energy efficiency market and industry development in West Africa. It enables policymakers, industry, investors and civil society to make informed decisions with regards to the diffusion of renewable energy. The 92-page report covers recent developments, current status, and key trends; by design, it does not provide analysis or forecast.

The production of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status Report was supported by ECOWAS, UNIDO under the GEF Strategic Program for West Africa, The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and the Austrian Development Agency. (ADA). Over 50 experts and reviewers from across the ECOWAS region and elsewhere contributed to the report’s content.
