ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access

ECOWAS pioneers the first regional gender and energy policy

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would be setting a new benchmark, as far as gender equality and energy access goes, through its “ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access”. The Policy, which aims to address inequalities that exist in energy production and consumption, would be the first of its kind.

The “ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access” will commit the governments of the Member States to concrete actions that would address existing barriers that may hinder the equal participation of women and men in expanding energy access in West Africa and contribute to the success of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative.

The Policy is being developed by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the ECOWAS Department of Social Affairs and Gender, with the assistance of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)/Clean Energy Solutions Centre of the United States.

The project aims at providing the village of Bambadinca (region of Bafata, Guinea-Bissau) with a modern, reliable and accessible electricity service from renewable energy sources. In Bambadinca, NGO TESE sem fronteiras, is implementing this innovative project; "Bambadinca Sta Claro", where 6500 persons will receive energy from a large solar PV system, covering 15,000 m2, that will be producing 270 kW electric power. The electricity benefits both women and children, households, schools and local businesses. About 120 pilot customers started testing on15th November 2014 the Community Energy Service of Bambadinca (SCEB).

Biomass Waste-to-Energy Toolkit for Development Practitioners

This document presents a toolkit that has been developed by SNVs REDD+ Energy and Agriculture Programme (REAP). With the purpose of supporting development practicioners this toolkit does not promote a one size fits all approach. But instead it provides practitioners a waste to energy project with a focus on the use of agricultural and forestry waste for the generation of electricity, by using technologies including combustion, gasification and anaerobic digestion.

The document has been developed under the REDD+ Program, and published by the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, Energy research Centre of the Netherlands.
