PV systems installed in all hospitals in Cabo Verde

PV systems installed in Agostinho Neto Central Hospital in Praia

Finalized in 2018, the project Distributed Solar Energy Systems, funded by the World Bank through the Small Island Develoing States (SIDS) fund, has installed solar energy production capacity in all regional and central hospitals in the country. The project will contribute to reduce the financial resources spend by the hospitals in electricity, thus contributing to improve the medical service provided to the users. The project also contributes to increase the sustanability of the energy sector in the country, as it reduces the energy demand in a country still dominated by the high dependency on fuel imports for energy production.

Starts construction of the 158.7MW Taïba N'diaye wind farm in Senegal

The construction of the 158.7MW Taïba N'diaye wind farm in Senegal started in January 2019. The wind farm will be located in the Tivaouane Region, approximately 70km northwest of Dakar. The company Eiffage Energía in collaboration with Vestas will build the wind farm. Once operational, it will be the second large wind farm in ECOWAS region and will provide electricity to about 150,000 households.

The National Direction of Industry, Commerce and Energy (DNICE) opened in December 2018 a period of Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) that will finalize y January 30th, 2019. The REOI is the formal invitation to applicants to be considered for the evaluation for qualification of bidders to participate in the procurement process for an IPP project (Independent Power Producer) for a 10MW wind power plant in Santiago island, Cabo Verde.

Guinea Bissau Sustainable Energy International Conference - December 2018

The Government of Guinea Bissau, in partnership with UNIDO, ECREEE and ALER, supported by the GEF (Global Environment Facility), organized the Guinea Bissau Sustainable Energy International Conference in Bissau, Guinea Bissau, on December 6th and 7th. This event welcomed around 150 participants from Guinean public institutions, private sector, financiers, NGOs and academic institutions. This conference was a final mile-stone of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded UNIDO project "Promoting Renewable Energy Investments in the Electricity Sector of Guinea Bissau”. Since 2014 the project assists the Government in creating an enabling environment through combined interventions in the areas of policy and planning, (pre-)investment support, technology demonstration, as well as capacity building.

Commissioning of Malbaza 7MW solar plant in Niger

The ECOWAS member state commissioned in November 2018 its first solar PV plant in Malbaza, a rural community in the Tahoua region. The project, funded by the Indian Government, will provide electricity access to about 30,000 households in the departments of Madaoua, Malbaza and Konni. This commissioning sets a start point to the diversification of the energy mix in the country. The aim of the national utility is to have about 100MW of solar energy installed by 2021.

Regional Monitoring Framework Report 2016

ECREEE has published the first Regional Progress Report that is based on the ‘Regional Monitoring and Reporting Framework for the ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policies and the Sustainable Energy Country Action Plans’. The report monitors for 2016 the situation against the different targets set on renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy access, that were fixed by the member states in the respective National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policies (NREAPs and NEEAPs) and in the Sustainable Energy Country Action Plans.
