Nigeria's FEC Approves draft National Policy on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

The overall objective of the National Policy on Renewable Energy and Efficiency (NPREEE) is to increase access using renewable energy mix, create new business opportunities and new jobs, support global efforts towards green economies and address climate change problems. In addition, the policy will also promote and encourage efficient use of energy and energy conservation in Nigeria.

Energy Information System launched in The Republic Guinea

The Republic of Guinea has on February 2015 launched "le Système d'Information Energétique (SIE)". The EIS represents an online tool to centralize energy information of the country, measure trends and inform stakeholders. The platform was developed by the French consulting firm "Innovation Energie Développement (IED)" for the National Directorate of Energy, with support of the African Development Bank in the framework of the project PREREC, "Réhabilitation et d'extension des réseaux électriques de la ville de conakry".

Study Report on Novel Bioenergy Crop Potential in the ECOWAS Region

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has launched a publication on the study of Novel Bioenergy Crop Potential in the ECOWAS Region. The publication was developed under the project titled "Regional potential assessment of novel bioenergy crops in fifteen ECOWAS countries", in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Industrial Biotechnology Network (IIBN) and QUINVITA. The project is based on the need to make an overall assessment of a series of novel potential bioenergy crops which can or could be grown and processed in the ECOWAS region.

GIS Mapping of Hydropower Resources in West Africa

The ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency kicked-off on the 16th of March, 2015 together with Pöyry Energy GmbH, the project which seeks to map the hydropower resources for all the river basins in the ECOWAS region. The project is promoted by ECREEE under the context of the Small Scale Hydropower Program (SSHP), which was adopted by the ECOWAS Ministers of Energy in October 2012. The results will be one of the first data sources on small hydro power potential in the ECOWAS region.

Small Hydropower World Portal

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP) have developed an interactive web platform which seeks to identify the world's small hydropower development status and its potential in different countries and regions by engaging with stakeholders to share information. Most of the available data on the website is extracted from the World Small Hydropower Development Report 2013 (WSHPDR 2013). The project represents a world-first compilation of global small hydropower data, and aims to be a crucial policy and investment guide for renewable energy provision through small hydropower.

Inauguration of the Community Energy Service of Bambadinca

Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, Eng. Domingos Simões Pereira, and the ECOWAS Commissioner for Energy and Mines, Mr. Bangoura Morlaye, inaugurated on March 4 2015 the Community Energy Service of Bambadinca (SCEB).

The entry into service of SCEB will allow inhabitants of Bambadinca overcome the constraints in electricity access. Around 8.000 inhabitants will benefit from a
permanent supply of renewable energy, which is guaranteed by a innovative hybrid photovoltaic plant of 312 kW of power. This is the result of the project titled "Bambadinca Sta Claro", funded by the European Union, the Camões Language and Cooperation Institute,UNIDO and ECREEE, with the support of the Directorate General of Energy.
