Main Activities &Outputs

The project activity involves the installation of a 125 MW wind farm in the commune of Taiba N’Diaye, Senegal. The project is being developed by Sarreole S.a.r.l. Sarreole is a French based developer with more than 10 years experience in the development, construction and operation of renewable energy projects internationally. Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye S.A is a Senegalese company set up to own and operate the Taiba N’Diaye wind farm. In the absence of the project activity, electricity would have been generated by the operation of gridconnected power plants, which are predominantly fossil fuel based. Therefore the Taiba N’Diaye Wind Energy Project will displace carbon dioxide that would have been produced in the absence of the project activity by the grid connected power plants.

The Taiba N’Diaye Wind Energy Project will be the first wind project in Senegal and the largest wind project in West Africa in terms of installed capacity. The generated electricity will be supplied to Senelec, the state owned utility, under a long term power purchase agreement (PPA). The project consists of two sites 3 km apart. Twenty turbines will be located at site 1 and thirty turbines at site. A wind mast has been installed at the site since March 2008. An independent third party wind analysis was carried out to determine the potential for energy generation at the site. This analysis used wind measurements recorded at the site from March 2008 to May 2009. It correlated these measurements with long term wind data from the Dakar Meteorological Station located approximately 70 km from the site. From this analysis it has been estimated that approximately 280 GWh of electricity will be generated annually by the project, displacing 4,127,760 tonnes of carbon dioxide (tCO2) over the 3 X 7 year crediting period.
