Senegal inaugurates its fourth Solar PV PlantIn January 2018 Senegal has inaugurated its fourth grid connected PV plant. The project is located in Mérina Ndakhar and has an installed capacity of 30MW. With the commissioning of this plant, the ECOWAS member state counts now with 104 MW of solar grid connected installed capacity, thus contributing to achieve the national target of producing the 30% of the electricity by using renewable energy resources by 2020. The energy produced by the solar plant will be bought by the national utility, Senelec. Read More |

Inaugurated in Senegal the largest solar PV plant in West AfricaThe Santhiou Mékhé solar PV plant in the community of Thies in Senegal was inagurated on 29th June 2017 being at the moment the largest solar PV plant in West Africa, with 30MW of installed capacity. After the inauguration of the Senergy 2 solar plant (20 MW) and the Malicounda PV plant (22 MW) in October and November 2016, this plant represents the third grid-connected PV plant commisioned in the ECOWAS member state in less than one year. With a cost of 41 millions of €, the plant is supposed to supply electricity to 200,000 households of the country and add a significant bit to guide Senegal to achieve 20% of electricity production through the use of renewable energies by end of 2017. Pioneer projects on Pay-As-You-Go Solar Systems increase rural energy access in SenegalPay-As-You-Go is increasingly being used as a mechanism for financing the purchase of small-scale RE technologies in West Africa, as well as facilitating payment for ongoing energy service by an energy producer or utility in ECOWAS developing countries. In Senegal, some pioneer projects have started offering consumers the ability to pre-pay for their energy, mitigating one of the main obstacles in providing solar technology to people from rural areas: their inability to meet stand-alone product costs, or to pay for service on an ongoing basis from either products or larger network-based solutions such as mini-grids. Senegal inaugurates a 20 MW solar power plantSenegal officially launched on the 22nd of October 2016, a 20MW solar power plant (Senergy 2) in Bokho in the country’s north. Senergy 2 is part of a two-plant project and is set to provide electricity to around 160,000 people. It is an important step for a nation which is actively working for the inclusion of renewables in the energy mix. Currently Senegal meets most of its energy needs by using imported fossil fuels. According to the ECOWREX data portal, the electrification rate in 2016 is 90% for urban areas whereas it is 30% for rural areas. With this grid-connected solar plant, the member state makes a movement to become an example for renewable energy development in West Africa, a region that still lags behind in its development and use of the technology.
