International fair for Energy and Water organized in Benin- December 15-18, 2016The Ministry of Energy, Water and Mines of Benin is organizing the first edition of the Energy and Water International Exhibition of Benin (SIEEB), that will be held from 15th to 18th of December 2016 at the Congress Palace in Cotonou. With more than 50 stands, 10 speakers and training workshops, this exhibition promisses in innovation and demonstration for a better management of water and energy in Africa. It brings together water and energy production companies, equipment suppliers companies, instalation and maintenance companies, utilities, academia, investment and financing institutions and more stakeholders.This event sets a precedent for the professionals working in the energy and water sector to connect with all different stakeholders and to get knowledge of all different activities and innovative solutions that exists in the sector. ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status ReportREN21 in cooperation with the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has just released a new report: The ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status Report. The report provides a regional perspective on the renewable energy and energy efficiency market and industry development in West Africa. It enables policymakers, industry, investors and civil society to make informed decisions with regards to the diffusion of renewable energy. The 92-page report covers recent developments, current status, and key trends; by design, it does not provide analysis or forecast. The production of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status Report was supported by ECOWAS, UNIDO under the GEF Strategic Program for West Africa, The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and the Austrian Development Agency. ECOWAS Countries Move Forward on SE4All InitiativeThe Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) convened representatives of the 15 ECOWAS countries for a kick-off workshop on the development of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency National Action Plans and Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Action Agendas in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire from March 17-19, 2014. The meeting took place against the backdrop of promising sustainable energy developments in the ECOWAS region, particularly with the adoption of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy (EREP) and the ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy (EEEP) by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in July 2013. Furthermore, all 15 ECOWAS countries have opted-in to Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative and the workshop took place following the clarification of the SE4ALL country action process subsequent to a meeting hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Tunis in December 2013. Gambia: Bill to promote renewable energy approvedA Bill that seeks to establish the legal, economic and institutional basis to promote the use of renewable energy resources was unanimously approved on December 12, 2013, by The Gambia's 53-member unicameral National Assembly during the fourth meeting of the 2013 Legislative year. The Gambia currently depends heavily on the use of wood and charcoal and fossil fuel to meet its energy requirements. Electricity generation in the country is mainly dependent on imported fossil fuel (heavy fuel oil and diesel), which is the most expensive mode of electricity generation. On the contrary, the West African country has a lot of renewable energy resources such as the sun, wind and bio-energy, which if properly harnessed and effectively utilised would help increase the access rate to modern energy, which is a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly source of fossil fuel. Rural Electrification in Benin: Yayi Boni launches the project of electrification of 67 villagesThe President of the Republic of Benin, accompanied by the Minister of Energy Barthélémy Kassa, on the 2nd of January, 2014, launched the electrification project of sixty-seven (67) new communities within the city of Abomey-Calabi. The people of Abomey-Calabi were mobilized to expressed their gratitude to Boni Yayi. In his welcome address, the mayor of the community of Abomey-Calabi recalled the many development activities initiated by the President Boni Yayi for the people of Benin, in particular the city Abomey-Calabi . According to Patrice Hounsou-Guèdè, the actions of the leader of the State have revolutioned all sectors of development since 2006 and the energy sector is indeed a clear example of it. Read More |
