Inaugurated Senegal’s first utility-scale wind farmParc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) was officially inaugurated in February 2020. The project is Senegal’s first utility-scale wind energy project and aligns with the Government of Senegal’s strategy of increasing clean electricity production and diversifying Senegal’s energy mix. The project is also expected to help reduce the cost of electricity generation in Senegal, which has one of the highest generation costs in Sub-Saharan Africa. Starts construction of the 158.7MW Taïba N'diaye wind farm in SenegalThe construction of the 158.7MW Taïba N'diaye wind farm in Senegal started in January 2019. The wind farm will be located in the Tivaouane Region, approximately 70km northwest of Dakar. The company Eiffage Energía in collaboration with Vestas will build the wind farm. Once operational, it will be the second large wind farm in ECOWAS region and will provide electricity to about 150,000 households. Read More |
Open Request for Expressions of Interest for a 10MW Wind IPP project in Cabo VerdeThe National Direction of Industry, Commerce and Energy (DNICE) opened in December 2018 a period of Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) that will finalize y January 30th, 2019. The REOI is the formal invitation to applicants to be considered for the evaluation for qualification of bidders to participate in the procurement process for an IPP project (Independent Power Producer) for a 10MW wind power plant in Santiago island, Cabo Verde. 7,6 MW of three RE Projects in Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde and Senegal
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) announced on January, 2016, USD 46 million in concessional loans for four renewable energy projects in the three ECOWAS Member States and Antigua and Barbuda. The loans will fund a solar project in Burkina Faso, a solar and wind project in Cabo Verde and a solar project in Senegal. The three projects will result in 7,6 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity and represent a mix of renewable energy sources, are all innovative, potentially replicable or scalable, and will improve energy access.

The report provides a regional perspective on the renewable energy and energy efficiency market and industry development in West Africa. It enables policymakers, industry, investors and civil society to make informed decisions with regards to the diffusion of renewable energy. The 92-page report covers recent developments, current status, and key trends; by design, it does not provide analysis or forecast. The production of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Status Report was supported by ECOWAS, UNIDO under the GEF Strategic Program for West Africa, The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and the Austrian Development Agency.
