The Nigerian Energizing Education Program inaugurates its first solar hybrid plantThe 2,8 MW solar hybrid plant is part of the Energizing Education Program (EEP) implemented by the federal government through the Rural Electrification Agency. The objective of this program is to equip the main education centers with their own power generation units. Read More |
Mali solar rural electrification project will develop 50 solar minigrids in its first approved stageThe Green Climate Fund board approved the Mali solar rural electrification project at its 22nd meeting in February 2019. The project is expected to provide funding to solar-based mini-grids for rural electrification, with a total investment of EUR 46.2 million of which EUR 33.64 million in high concessional sovereign loan and EUR 2 million grant for technical assistance. GCF funding will additionally mobilise EUR 10.6 million from the West African Development Bank (BOAD). The first approved stage of the project will deliver access to clean energy to 50 localities in Mali, reaching 28,300 households. Read More |
Open Call for Proposals for the Off-Grid Clean Energy Facility in BeninThe Off-Grid Clean Energy Facility is a component of the MCA-Benin II Off-Grid Electricity Access Project. It seeks proposals from private companies, NGOs, communities and other entities that demonstrate viable off-grid, clean energy solutions for Benin. The first call for proposals is open from February 22 to May 22, 2018. Read More |

The Mini-grid Finder: a GIS geospatial application for mini-grid planning in NigeriaThe Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) has supported the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing (FMPWH) in developing a GIS-based search engine, the “Mini-grid Finder”. It is built primarily to help mini-grid developers in identifying viable sites for off-grid solar mini-grids in Nigeria. It covers the five states (Cross River, Niger, Sokoto, Plateau and Ogun) in which NESP is operating. It includes different search options (e.g. load, population, distance from national grid). Users can extract the results of their search into Excel or Google Earth for further processing. Read More |
New solar mini-grid plants operational in LiberiaIn June 2017, five remote communities in Lofa receive a solar power plant and mini-grids as part of the project Light Up Our Futures, funded by EU and implemented by PLAN International and VOSIEDA, with technical support of GIZ/EnDev. Read More |
Seven PV mini-grid plants inaugurated in Burkina FasoSIAD (Service International d’Appui au Développement) and partners inaugurated in March 2017 seven PV mini-grid plants in the rural communities of Guiba and Bindé in Burkina Faso. The inauguration of these renewable energy plants marked one significant achievement for a project which started in 2012 and it set an important step forward to increase the rural electrification in Burkina Faso. UNIDO report on Renewable Energy-based mini-gridsDespite the considerable potential for an accelerated use of renewable energy-based mini-grids, opportunities for income generation and social and environmental benefits, progress continues to be hampered by a number of key barriers and bottlenecks. Many countries still lack sufficient technical capacities to install, operate and maintain the systems, the regulatory framework to attract project developers, and access to financing to bring sufficient scale. UNIDO’s access to energy projects aim to address these issues, yet the evidence suggests that there is no unique business model that can easily and universally be replicated and scaled-up. This report takes stock of the current experience, and draws interim conclusions on the lessons learnt, and provides guiding recommendations for designing energy access projects. Read More |
Mapping and Assessment of Existing Clean Energy Mini-Grid Experiences in West AfricaThe report “Mapping and Assessment of Existing Clean Energy Mini-Grid Experiences in West Africa” was released at the High-level Workshop on Energy Access in West Africa in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Among other important issues discussed, the report provides orientation regarding financial schemes, management models and technology to face current energy challenges. Read More |
ADFD and IRENA Announce Funding by ADFD of USD 44.5 million in Four Developing Countries including NigerFour renewable energy projects in developing countries (Marshall Islands, Niger, Seychelles and Solomon Islands) have been identified by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to receive USD 44.5 million in funding. ADFD’s funding will support a diverse set of projects including a hybrid micro-grid project employing solar PV and advanced lithium-ion batteries, a hydropower project, integrated wind and solar, and a combination project consisting of micro-grid and solar home kits. The announcement of this fourth round of funding by the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility was made on January 14th at the Seventh Session of the IRENA Assembly. Read More |
7,6 MW of three RE Projects in Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde and Senegal
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) announced on January, 2016, USD 46 million in concessional loans for four renewable energy projects in the three ECOWAS Member States and Antigua and Barbuda. The loans will fund a solar project in Burkina Faso, a solar and wind project in Cabo Verde and a solar project in Senegal. The three projects will result in 7,6 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity and represent a mix of renewable energy sources, are all innovative, potentially replicable or scalable, and will improve energy access.
